Nursing Programme Enrollment in Nigeria Rises from 28,000 to 115,000

The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a major increase in the number of students enrolling in nursing programmes. According to the Federal Ministry of Education, enrollment numbers have jumped from 28,000 to 115,000 annually. This achievement reflects the government’s commitment to improving healthcare education and strengthening the nation’s healthcare system.

A statement by the Director of Press at the Ministry of Education, Folasade Boriowo, highlighted that this leap is part of the efforts made since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office on May 28, 2023. It shows that the administration’s focus on revitalizing critical sectors like health and education under the Renewed Hope Agenda is yielding results.

Government’s Strategy to Boost Healthcare Workforce

The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, emphasized the administration’s drive to promote Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medical Sciences (STEMM). Working closely with the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, led by Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, the government initially set a target of enrolling 110,000 nursing students. However, through coordinated efforts, they surpassed the goal, reaching 115,000 enrollments.

This increase is expected to address the shortage of qualified healthcare professionals in Nigeria and meet growing demands both locally and internationally. It will also improve the availability of well-trained nurses in hospitals, clinics, and healthcare facilities across the country.

“Investing in healthcare education is investing in the nation’s future. With more trained nurses, Nigeria is building a healthier, stronger, and more prosperous society.”

A Collective Effort

Dr. Alausa expressed gratitude to stakeholders, including the Nigerian Council of Nurses and Midwifery, teaching hospitals, industry leaders, and ministry staff, for their roles in achieving this milestone. Their collaboration has played a vital role in expanding Nigeria’s nursing education capacity.

The surge in nursing programme enrollment is a positive step toward building a stronger healthcare system in Nigeria. With more trained nurses entering the workforce, the country is better positioned to improve healthcare services, reduce the patient-to-nurse ratio, and meet global healthcare demands. This development offers new opportunities for young Nigerians interested in pursuing rewarding careers in healthcare, contributing to both personal growth and national development.
