FG Boosts Agriculture with Free Fertilizers and N200bn Investment

Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari

The Federal Government has taken major steps to improve food production in Nigeria. According to the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, over N200 billion has been invested in agriculture. Additionally, 2,150,000 bags of fertilizers were distributed free of charge to farmers across the country to help improve yields and lower production costs.

Why This Matters to You

This intervention means more support for farmers, especially small-scale ones. The government is not only offering free fertilizers but also pushing schemes like the out-grower programme which gives farmers access to short-term funding between planting and harvesting seasons. This means you can apply or register with cooperatives or extension offices in your area to benefit.

Improving Food Security and Creating Jobs

Kyari explained that President Tinubu’s administration is committed to achieving food security and food sovereignty. The ministry’s name was even changed to reflect this goal. With support from international bodies like FAO and the World Bank, the government is working to make Nigeria self-sufficient, especially in rice and wheat production.

More Youths Needed in Mechanized Farming

The minister called for more youth involvement in agriculture, highlighting the shift towards mechanization. Traditional farming methods are being replaced with improved technologies, which make the work easier and more profitable.

Local Success Attracts International Attention

The success of Nigeria’s farming methods is drawing attention from other African countries. A Gambian delegation visited Kebbi State to study Nigeria’s rice farming model. They praised the out-grower scheme, seed development, and post-harvest techniques, and plan to adopt similar systems in Gambia.

“With over N200 billion invested and more than 2 million bags of fertiliser distributed freely, we are not just supporting farmers — we are building a food-secure Nigeria.” – Abubakar Kyari, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security

If you’re a farmer or planning to venture into agriculture, now is a good time. Visit your state’s Ministry of Agriculture or local agricultural extension office to find out how to register for government support like free fertilizers, seeds, or out grower schemes. Youths are especially encouraged to take part in the mechanized farming revolution for better income and job creation.
