Tinubu Orders Mandatory Health Insurance in MDAs.

President Bola Tinubu
President Bola Tinubu has directed that all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) must implement compulsory health insurance in line with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) Act, 2022. This move is aimed at improving access to healthcare and ensuring Nigerians are better protected against health-related financial burdens.
What the Directive Means for Workers
All employees in government MDAs will now be enrolled in the NHIA health insurance plan. This means federal workers and their families will have access to affordable healthcare without paying directly from their pockets at the hospital. MDAs may also choose to add extra private insurance coverage if needed.
Health Insurance and Public Services
To make public services more accountable, the directive also requires:
Health Insurance Certificates: Any business or individual applying for contracts, licenses, or permits from government agencies must present a valid NHIA-issued certificate.
Procurement Compliance: Companies participating in government contracts must prove they are covered by NHIA.
This ensures wider adoption of health insurance, especially in the private sector.
Digital Verification for Transparency
The NHIA will launch a digital platform where anyone can verify the authenticity of Health Insurance Certificates. This step will help curb fraud, ensure transparency, and give citizens confidence in the system.
“With compulsory health insurance, Nigerians can focus on living healthier lives without the fear of medical bills draining their pockets.”
How Nigerians Can Benefit
Affordable Healthcare – Workers under MDAs will spend less on medical bills, as insurance will cover major treatments.
Access for Businesses – Business owners must comply to qualify for contracts, meaning employees will also benefit from coverage.
Protection for Families – With insurance, families are shielded from unexpected health expenses.
Ease of Verification – The upcoming NHIA digital system will make checking certificates fast and reliable.
“With compulsory health insurance, Nigerians will no longer face financial hardship just to access quality healthcare. This reform is a step towards universal health coverage.”
President Tinubu’s directive on mandatory health insurance across MDAs is a significant step toward making healthcare more accessible and affordable. By linking compliance to government services and contracts, more Nigerians will be drawn into the health insurance net, creating a healthier and more productive nation.
