The Oyo State Government, in collaboration with Kunle Afolayan’s KAP Film & Television Academy, has unveiled a 10-day intensive filmmaking residency programme for youths. Themed “Emerging Stories”, the residency will take place from October 6 to 15 at the KAP Film Village & Resort in Igbojaye, Oyo State—the same location where Netflix’s hit Aníkúlápó was produced.
The programme will provide practical training in screenwriting, directing, cinematography, editing, and film business, giving young creatives the skills needed to thrive in the film industry.
Mentorship from Industry Icons
Participants will receive guidance from respected figures in Nigerian cinema, including Kunle Afolayan, Tunde Kelani, and Joke Silva. According to Afolayan, the programme is designed not only to teach technical skills but also to instill passion and discipline:
“This residency is much more about technical skills; it’s about instilling the passion and discipline required to become a successful storyteller,” he said.
Government’s Commitment to Youth Empowerment
Governor Seyi Makinde emphasized that the initiative aligns with Oyo State’s vision to empower young people while boosting the cultural economy. He noted that the partnership with KAP Academy will create new opportunities for creativity, innovation, and employment.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ademola Ojo, also confirmed that participants drawn from across the state are ready to begin the training.
“Empowering young people with creative skills today means shaping the storytellers who will define Nigeria’s future.”
How to Benefit from This Opportunity
For young Nigerians interested in filmmaking, this programme shows that opportunities are growing locally. Here’s how to position yourself for similar chances:
Stay informed – Follow updates from your state government and creative institutions for training opportunities.
Develop your passion – Start small with storytelling, smartphone filming, or editing practice.
Apply when programmes open – Many training opportunities require applications; prepare a portfolio or short film to stand out.
Network – Use residencies, workshops, and film festivals to meet professionals and peers in the industry.
The Oyo State–KAP Academy partnership is a step forward in creating a generation of skilled Nigerian filmmakers who can tell authentic African stories on global platforms. For youths, it is proof that with the right training and discipline, the film industry can be a viable career path that contributes to both personal success and national development.
