Oyo Gives Free Textbooks, School Bags and Sandals to Public School Pupils

The Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (Oyo SUBEB), in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), has officially flagged off the 2024 intervention programme to support public primary and junior secondary school pupils across Oyo State.

The event took place in Ibadan, where learning materials were released for distribution to schools in all local government areas.

What the programme is about

According to the OYOSUBEB Chairman, Nureni Adeniran, the intervention focuses on improving teaching and learning in public schools through the supply of essential materials.

The items distributed include:

  • Thousands of Primary Mathematics and Primary English textbooks (Books 1–3)
  • Nursery English and Mathematics textbooks
  • Science and Technology books
  • 40,000 continuous assessment cards
  • School bags, exercise books, pencils and sandals, including special BESDA sandals for vulnerable children

Why this support matters to families

The Executive Secretary of UBEC, Aisha Garba, explained that the exercise is not just about materials, but about helping children stay in school and learn better.

“This distribution represents a reinforcement of hope and our commitment to quality, inclusive and equitable basic education for every Nigerian child.”

She added that the programme aligns with the education agenda of Bola Tinubu, which prioritises literacy, numeracy and skills development at the basic education level.

UBEC also disclosed that 15 million school bags, sandals and writing materials are being distributed nationwide to reduce the burden on poor and vulnerable families.

How your child can benefit from this programme

Parents and guardians do not need to apply online or pay any fee.

To benefit:

  1. Your child must be enrolled in a public primary or junior secondary school in Oyo State
  1. Visit your child’s school and confirm from the head teacher or principal that the school is part of the current SUBEB distribution list.
  1. Ensure your child is properly registered and regularly attending school, as materials are issued through schools.
  1. If items do not reach your child’s class, you can report directly to the nearest SUBEB office in your local government.

The Oyo SUBEB leadership warned that the materials are meant strictly for classroom use and must not be stored or diverted.

“These materials are not for storage but for active classroom use,” Dr. Adeniran stressed.

Stakeholders commend the initiative

The Nigeria Union of Teachers in Oyo State praised the government for continuous investments in learning materials, infrastructure and teacher welfare.

This intervention by Oyo SUBEB and UBEC is a major relief for parents struggling with the rising cost of school supplies. It also helps improve learning outcomes and keeps vulnerable children in school. Parents are encouraged to stay in touch with their schools and ensure their children fully benefit from the programme.
