Nigerian music star, Adekunle Gold, has launched a free health insurance scheme called ‘5 Star Care’ to support people living with sickle cell disorder. The initiative was unveiled on June 19, 2025, in celebration of World Sickle Cell Day, and is aimed at easing the financial burden of treatment for sickle cell patients in Lagos State.

Through the Adekunle Gold Foundation, and in partnership with the Lagos State Ministry of Health, Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA), and Sickle Cell Management Initiatives, the scheme will provide free health insurance for 1,000 sickle cell warriors in its first phase.

Why This Matters

Adekunle Gold, who has publicly shared his own experience with sickle cells, said the scheme is his way of giving back and standing with others living with the condition.

“5 Star Care isn’t just an initiative, it’s a promise. A promise to make sure that sickle cell warriors are seen, heard, and cared for,” he said.

He added that this is just the beginning, and more people will benefit in the future as the programme expands.

“As somebody who’s walked this path, I know how powerful it is to have the right support. Every sickle cell warrior deserves care that’s not just good, but 5-star.” — Adekunle Gold
