Bauchi State Evacuates 64 UNIJOS Students Amid Plateau Violence
The Bauchi State Government has successfully evacuated 64 students of the University of Jos (UNIJOS) following recent violent attacks in the Angwan Rukuba area of Jos, Plateau State, which reportedly left 27 people dead. The evacuation underscores the government’s commitment to protecting students and ensuring their uninterrupted education.
Government Responds Quickly to Distress Call
The evacuation came after a distress alert from Mohammed Suleiman, President of the National Union of Bauchi State Students (NUBASS), who informed authorities that students were trapped in their hostels amid the violence.
The Bauchi State Commissioner for Higher Education, Hadiza Kango, confirmed the prompt response on Friday while receiving the students at the Government House in Bauchi. She said:
“My attention was drawn to the situation by the NUBASS President, Mohammed Suleiman. Immediately, he alerted me, I acted, and the government responded swiftly with full support and cooperation to rescue the students.”
Officials ensured the students’ safe transfer before handing them over to their parents and guardians, prioritising both safety and educational continuity.
Student Leaders Praise Government Action
Mohammed Abdulwahab, one of the student leaders, confirmed that buses and security personnel were deployed for the evacuation. He commended the Bauchi State Government for the rapid intervention, describing it as “prompt and effective”.
The students were reportedly cooperative during the evacuation, staying together and avoiding confrontation amid the unrest.
Education and Safety Remain a Priority
Commissioner Kango emphasized the importance of education in her statement:
“Education is very important. Their status as students informed our quick intervention. I am glad they stayed together, avoided trouble, and did not participate in the crisis. That shows responsibility. They should maintain this conduct and remain committed to their studies.”- The Bauchi State Commissioner for Higher Education, Hadiza Kango
The Plateau crisis has increased security concerns in Jos, affecting residents, institutions, and students alike. The swift evacuation highlights the importance of government readiness and student vigilance in times of crisis.
The Bauchi State Government’s rapid evacuation of 64 UNIJOS students demonstrates the critical role of prompt action, coordination, and student responsibility during security crises. As unrest continues in Plateau State, authorities and student leaders remain vital in ensuring safety while protecting education.
