BREAKING: JAMB Sets 150 as Minimum Cut-Off Mark for 2025 University Admissions
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), in collaboration with vice-chancellors of Nigerian universities, has set the minimum admission benchmark for the 2025 academic year at 150 for all universities. This was announced on Tuesday during the 2025 JAMB policy meeting.
This means that no university in Nigeria is permitted to admit candidates who score below 150 in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). However, some top universities have chosen to set higher cut-off marks.
Higher Benchmarks for Top Institutions
While 150 is the national minimum, some universities are setting their own higher standards. For instance:
University of Ibadan (UI) – 200
Pan-Atlantic University – 200
University of Lagos (UNILAG) – 200
This implies that even though JAMB permits 150, individual universities still have the autonomy to increase their benchmarks.
How Students Can Benefit from This Development
More Access to University Education:
Candidates who score 150 and above now have a broader chance to be considered for admission into many universities across the country.
Opportunity for Less Competitive Institutions:
Candidates who scored between 150 and 199 can target schools that accept lower cut-offs. This gives them a realistic chance of securing admission if they apply wisely.
Smart Course and School Selection:
Candidates should research and apply to universities whose cut-off marks match their UTME scores. They should also consider less competitive courses to improve their chances of admission.
“Setting the benchmark at 150 allows us to expand access to higher education while still enabling institutions to maintain their own academic standards,” — Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, JAMB Registrar.
Tips for Candidates Moving Forward:
Use your UTME score to shortlist suitable institutions.
Monitor post-UTME announcements from your school of choice.
Prepare well for post-UTME screening or aptitude tests.
Consider polytechnics and colleges of education if your score is below 150.
The 2025 UTME benchmark opens doors for many students who may have feared they wouldn’t make the cut. However, smart choices and timely action remain key. Candidates are encouraged to stay informed, seek guidance, and apply to institutions where they meet the cut-off to maximize their chances.
