Dangote Cement Launches Empowerment Programmes to Boost Livelihoods in Gboko Communities

Dangote Cement Plc has rolled out a wide-ranging empowerment initiative in Gboko, Benue State, aimed at improving livelihoods and promoting sustainable development in its host communities.

The programme is part of the company’s commitment to shared growth and was designed under a Community Development Agreement (CDA) signed with six mining communities in December 2024.

Community Development Agreement: What It Means

The Community Development Agreement was jointly agreed upon by Dangote Cement and six host communities, including Mbayion Community, which hosts the Gboko plant. The agreement covers a five-year development plan focused on economic empowerment, access to basic services, and skills development.

According to Dangote Cement, several projects under the agreement have already been completed, while others are currently ongoing.

Key Empowerment Programmes Benefiting the People

The empowerment initiatives are grouped into three major areas:

1. Women Empowerment Programme

This programme supports women with tools, training, and resources to start or expand small businesses, helping them become financially independent and support their families.

2. Farmers Empowerment Programme

Local farmers receive support aimed at improving agricultural productivity, income, and food security within the communities.

3. Youth Skill Development Programme

As part of youth empowerment, 30 young people recently graduated from a skills acquisition programme and were presented with certificates and starter packs, enabling them to immediately put their skills into practice and earn a living.

“At Dangote Cement Plc, we do not see our host communities merely as neighbours, but as valued partners in progress,” the company stated during the event.

Other Community Projects Already Delivered

Beyond empowerment programmes, Dangote Cement has also:

  • Commissioned motorised boreholes in Mbaswa, Agboghol, Mbatyu, and Pass Brothers communities
  • Improved access to clean and safe drinking water
  • Continued work on other CDA projects despite technical challenges

The company has assured residents that all outstanding projects will be completed in the coming year.

How Community Members Can Be Part of These Programmes

Residents of host communities can benefit by:

  • Registering through community leaders or development committees
  • Participating in community sensitisation meetings organised by Dangote Cement
  • Staying informed through local announcements on upcoming training and empowerment opportunities
  • Meeting eligibility requirements set under the Community Development Agreement

Priority is usually given to women, youths, and farmers from the six host communities.

Dangote Cement’s empowerment programmes in Gboko show how corporate organisations can support real, long-term development at the grassroots. By investing in skills, water access, and economic opportunities, the company is helping communities build sustainable futures. For residents, staying engaged and informed is key to benefiting from these life-changing initiatives.
