Enugu Partners World Bank to Empower Women Through Nigeria for Women Project

Governor Dr. Peter Mbah

The Enugu State Government has taken a major step to support women’s economic growth by signing a Subsidiary Loan Agreement for the Nigeria for Women Project (NFWP). This initiative, supported by the World Bank, is aimed at boosting financial independence and livelihood opportunities for women in the state.

The agreement was signed under the leadership of Governor Dr. Peter Mbah, through the Ministry of Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development. With the state also fulfilling its financial responsibility by paying the Counterpart Fund, the project is now ready to take off fully in Enugu.

What the Project Offers

The Nigeria for Women Project is set to bring life-changing benefits to women across the state. These include:

Formation of Women Affinity Groups (WAGs) – groups where women can network, save together, and support each other financially.

Grants for Women – small business grants will be given to selected women to help grow or start businesses.

Training Programs – these cover financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and skills development.

Improved Access to Financial Services – helping women easily access loans, savings, and insurance.

Support for Women-Led Businesses – the project targets industrial growth, export readiness, and food security initiatives led by women.

“Our women are the bedrock of our society and economy. By signing this agreement and fulfilling our financial obligations, we are not just ticking boxes—we are empowering the women of Enugu to lead, build, and thrive.”
— Ngozi Enih, Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Enugu State

Why This Matters

According to Commissioner for Gender Affairs, Ngozi Enih, “Our women are the bedrock of our society and economy. By signing this agreement and remitting the counterpart fund, we are showing our belief in their potential and giving them the tools they need to succeed.”

Women in Enugu State, especially those in rural and underserved areas, are encouraged to participate in this initiative by registering with the Women Affinity Groups once they are established in their communities.

Looking Ahead

State Project Coordinator, Blessing Ogbonna, expressed gratitude to Governor Mbah for his support. She noted that the project would change the lives of thousands of women by promoting economic resilience, financial inclusion, and community development.

This is a golden opportunity for Enugu women to gain the skills, support, and funding they need to grow their businesses and improve their families’ lives. Women are encouraged to stay informed, join WAGs, and fully engage with all the resources that will be made available.
