FG Targets 2 million Jobs Through Affordable Housing Scheme

Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa.

The Federal Government has launched a major initiative—the Renewed Hope Social Housing Programme—to tackle Nigeria’s housing shortage and create over two million jobs nationwide. According to the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, this project will deliver 100 affordable homes in each of Nigeria’s 774 local government areas, targeting low-income earners, vulnerable people, the unemployed, and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

The homes will be built using labor-intensive methods to maximize job creation—estimated at 27 jobs per location, across 77,400 locations. This translates to around 2 million jobs for skilled and unskilled workers, including artisans, laborers, plumbers, electricians, bricklayers, and more.

How Nigerians Can Benefit

Job Seekers: If you are looking for work, especially in construction, register with your local council or state housing authority to express interest in working on upcoming sites.

Low-Income Families: These houses are designed for affordability. Once construction begins, you can apply to subscribe to housing units through the Ministry’s official portal or designated channels.

Youth and Artisans: Take advantage of the demand for vocational skills. Join or get certified through a registered trade association or training centre to increase your chances of employment under the scheme.

Dangiwa explained that funding will be sourced from the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund, and a bill will later be presented to the National Assembly to make the programme sustainable through a National Social Housing Fund.

“Housing is more than shelter; it’s economic empowerment,” Dangiwa said during a session with the House Committee on Housing and Habitat. He added that some Renewed Hope Cities and Estates in Abuja, Kano, and Lagos are almost complete and ready for commissioning once funds are released.

“This is not just about building houses; it’s about building livelihoods and restoring hope for millions of Nigerians.” — Ahmed Dangiwa, Minister of Housing and Urban Development

Lawmakers Pledge Support

Chairman of the House Committee, Abdulmumin Jibrin Kofa, affirmed the committee’s full backing, promising collaboration to overcome sector challenges and make the initiative impactful.

This is a golden opportunity for Nigerians—whether you’re unemployed, a skilled worker, or in need of affordable housing. Stay informed, get registered, and position yourself to benefit from this transformational programme that promises not just homes, but hope.
