Ibadan Airport and Circular Road Near Completion

Oyo State Acting Governor, Abdulraheem Lawal, has assured residents that two key projects — the upgrade of Samuel Ladoke Akintola International Airport and the Senator Rashidi Ladoja Circular Road — are close to completion.

During an inspection visit, Lawal explained that the airport upgrade has reached about 75–76% completion and will be ready for takeoff and landing soon. Similarly, the first segment of the Circular Road, spanning about 32.5 km, is expected to be delivered within the next few months.

Benefits for Nigerians

Boost to Air Travel and Trade

The upgraded airport will make Ibadan more attractive for domestic and international airlines.

With improved runway standards, including night landing systems, businesses can expect smoother cargo and passenger services. This will support trade, tourism, and investment in the Southwest region.

Economic Expansion and Job Creation

Both projects are designed under Governor Seyi Makinde’s economic expansion agenda.

The construction phase creates jobs for engineers, contractors, and artisans, while completed facilities will sustain employment in aviation, logistics, and road transport.

Reduced Traffic Congestion

The Circular Road is a legacy project that will ease gridlock in Ibadan by diverting heavy-duty vehicles away from the city centre.

This means shorter travel times, lower fuel costs, and less stress for commuters.

Improved Standards and Safety

The airport runway has undergone repeated tests and meets international standards.

The Circular Road’s hydraulic bridges and culverts are being built to durable specifications, ensuring safety for all users.

Government Commitment

Lawal emphasized that the state government will continue to engage contractors and provide adequate funding to ensure timely completion. He described both projects as “legacy projects” that will showcase Oyo State’s progress to visitors and investors.

“Upgrading our airport and constructing the Circular Road are not just infrastructure projects — they are pathways to economic growth, trade opportunities, and better living standards for Nigerians.”

When delivered, these projects will not only change the face of Ibadan but also strengthen Nigeria’s economy by improving connectivity, boosting trade, and creating opportunities. For residents and travellers, they promise convenience, safety, and a brighter economic outlook.
