ITF Strengthens Plans to Empower Nigerian Workers Through Modern Skills Training
ITF Director-General, Dr. Afiz Ogun
The Industrial Training Fund (ITF) has reaffirmed its commitment to equipping Nigerians—especially youths and artisans—with practical, industry-ready skills. This renewed effort aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises job creation, innovation, and workforce development.
During a recent visit to the Lanre Shittu Motor Assembly Plant in Lagos, ITF Director-General, Dr. Afiz Ogun, emphasized that the agency’s mission goes beyond traditional training. It focuses on helping Nigerians build sustainable careers and launch successful businesses.
Key Initiatives Nigerians Can Benefit From
1. Skills Upgrading and Professional Advancement (SUPA)
SUPA is one of ITF’s flagship programmes introduced under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. Dr. Ogun explained that SUPA is designed to retrain, retool, and certify Nigerian artisans to meet global standards. This means participants can access better jobs locally and even explore international opportunities.
“Starter packs alone are not enough. SUPA focuses on retraining and certifying artisans so they can compete locally and globally,” Dr. Ogun said.
2. Business Incubation for Entrepreneurs
ITF is finalizing its Business Incubation Scheme, which will help trainees start their own enterprises after completing their programmes. This is especially beneficial for youths who want to build income streams outside traditional employment.
3. Industry Partnerships for Better Training
Collaborations with companies like Lanre Shittu Motors (LSM) ensure that trainees learn with modern, industry-standard equipment. This gives participants real-world experience that improves their employability.
LSM’s Managing Director, Taiwo Shittu, praised the government’s efforts and confirmed that the company has set up three training centres across three states, providing accommodation, jobs, and good pay for successful trainees.
