Lagos Begins Installation of 22,000 Solar Streetlights to Improve Safety and Cut Energy Costs
SOLAR PANEL
The Lagos State Government has started installing over 22,000 solar-powered streetlights across the state under the Light Up Lagos Solar Streetlight Initiative. The project is being executed by the Lagos State Electrification Agency (LSEA), with policy oversight from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.
According to LSEA, the initiative aims to improve night-time visibility, public safety, and energy sustainability, while reducing Lagos’ long-standing dependence on grid electricity and diesel generators—systems that are costly, unreliable, and harmful to the environment.
Why Solar Streetlights Matter to Residents
Solar streetlights provide consistent lighting even during power outages. They also lower government spending on fuel and maintenance, savings that can be redirected to other public services. Importantly, better-lit roads help reduce accidents, deter crime, and support night-time economic activities for traders and commuters.
Areas Already Benefiting
Several major roads and bridges have already been fully illuminated. These include Governor’s Road (Alausa and Ikotun), Mobolaji Johnson Way, Herbert Macaulay Way, Bode Thomas Road, Muritala Muhammed Way, Eko Bridge, Marina Bridge, Market Street Oyingbo, and the Lekki–Ikoyi Link Bridge.
Installations are ongoing on Ikorodu Road (Anthony to Fadeyi), Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Ikeja Bridge, Western Avenue, Gbagada–Oshodi Expressway, Alapere/Ogudu, Agric–Ikorodu, with work also planned for the Lekki–Epe Expressway.
“This project reflects Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to building a cleaner, greener, and safer Lagos. By reducing dependence on fossil fuels and maximising solar energy, we are lighting up the city while preserving the environment for future generations.”- LSEA General Manager Kamaldeen Balogun
The Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunleye, added that the project aligns with Lagos’ long-term renewable energy goals and is being rolled out in phases to ensure no community is left behind.
The Light Up Lagos Solar Streetlight Initiative is more than an infrastructure project. It is a step towards safer streets, lower energy costs, environmental protection, and inclusive development. As installations continue, residents across Lagos can expect brighter nights and improved quality of life.
