Lagos Launches ₦150bn CNG Truck Scheme to Modernise Logistics and Improve Road Safety

The Lagos State Government has introduced a groundbreaking ₦150bn Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Trucks Scheme, designed to replace old, unsafe trucks with brand-new, environmentally friendly CNG-powered vehicles. The initiative was unveiled during a stakeholder engagement session with maritime and logistics operators.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by his Special Adviser on Transportation, Sola Giwa, explained that the scheme aims to eliminate the dangers posed by ageing, poorly maintained trucks that dominate Lagos roads. Many of these trucks, he said, have exceeded their lifespan and contribute significantly to accidents and traffic disruptions.

Why Lagos Needs This Change

For years, Lagos has battled with rickety trucks that break down on highways, cause gridlock, damage cargo, and endanger lives. The new scheme seeks to fix these problems by giving truck operators access to structured, affordable financing to upgrade their fleets.

United Bank for Africa (UBA) is partnering with the state government to fund the initiative with ₦150bn released in three tranches. The first tranche has already been disbursed.

“We cannot aspire to be a globally competitive logistics hub while relying on obsolete vehicles. This scheme will help operators acquire brand-new trucks through affordable credit facilities,” Giwa said.

The plan will support up to 2,000 new CNG trucks, reduce emissions, and improve logistics efficiency across major corridors including Lekki and Apapa.

Benefits Nigerians Can Gain from This Initiative This scheme has wide-reaching benefits:

  • Safer Roads: Fewer breakdowns and accidents caused by faulty trucks.
  • Cleaner Environment: CNG trucks release less pollution, improving air quality.
  • Lower Costs for Businesses: Efficient trucks reduce delays and damage to goods.
  • Better Job Conditions for Drivers: Through free eye tests, drug screening, and safety training.
  • Improved Logistics Flow: Digital call-up systems will reduce congestion, especially on the Lekki corridor.
  • Accessible Financing: Operators at all levels can modernise their fleets without financial strain.

By embracing cleaner technology, Lagos moves closer to a modern, globally competitive logistics system.

The ₦150bn CNG Trucks Scheme marks a major step toward safer roads, greener transportation, and a more efficient logistics sector in Lagos. Through strong partnerships and structured financing, truck operators can upgrade their fleets, businesses can operate smoothly, and residents can enjoy safer, cleaner mobility across the state.
