LAMATA Plans 10,000 Electric Buses to Drive a Greener Lagos by 2030
Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA)
The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced plans to deploy 10,000 electric buses across Lagos roads by 2030. This major step toward sustainability comes through a partnership with Greenplinth Africa Limited, aimed at transforming Lagos into a low-carbon public transport hub.
Endorsed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the initiative focuses on developing and managing carbon assets, creating cleaner mobility options, and positioning Lagos as a leader in sustainable transportation in Africa.
Cleaner Air and Cheaper Commutes for Lagosians
LAMATA’s spokesperson, Kolawole Ojelabi, described the plan as a “green and climate action initiative” that will significantly reduce carbon emissions and improve the quality of air in the city. The deployment of electric buses means fewer exhaust fumes, reduced traffic noise, and better health outcomes for residents.
For everyday Lagosians, this initiative also promises more reliable and affordable transportation. Electric buses have lower running and maintenance costs compared to diesel buses, which could reduce fare prices in the long run. Additionally, by cutting dependence on imported fuel, the project supports energy savings and economic stability.
Empowering New Job Opportunities
Beyond environmental benefits, the partnership will create opportunities in green jobs — from electric vehicle maintenance and charging infrastructure to carbon management and data analysis. It also aligns with the global movement toward clean energy, opening doors for local entrepreneurs to explore innovation in battery technology, renewable energy, and waste-to-fuel solutions.
“Our goal is to make Lagos a continental leader in sustainable urban mobility and a cleaner, healthier city for all,” — Kolawole Ojelabi, LAMATA spokesperson.
The project will also support initiatives like the Lagos Rail Mass Transit and the development of biogas plants, helping the state transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. With such forward-thinking projects, Lagos is setting an example for other African cities to follow.
LAMATA’s electric bus plan is more than a transport upgrade — it’s a pathway to cleaner air, cheaper transport, and new economic opportunities. As citizens, supporting and adapting to this change means contributing to a healthier, smarter, and more sustainable Lagos.
