NIGCOMSAT Connects 200 Rural Communities to the Internet

The Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) has successfully connected about 200 rural communities to the internet over the past eight months, marking a significant step toward bridging Nigeria’s digital divide. This initiative targets hard-to-reach areas to ensure that all Nigerians, regardless of location, can access reliable connectivity.

The announcement was made by the Managing Director/CEO, Mrs Jane Egerton-Idehen, during a media training for ICT reporters and editors at the NIGCOMSAT Ground Control Station in Abuja. She emphasized that the connectivity rollout is part of a larger plan to connect all 774 local government areas in Nigeria by the end of 2026.

How Nigerians Can Benefit

The expanded connectivity opens doors to a wide range of opportunities:

Education: Rural students can access online learning resources and digital classrooms.

Healthcare: Communities can leverage telemedicine services and access vital health information.

Commerce: Small businesses can reach wider markets online, boosting local economies.

Governance & Services: Citizens can access government services more efficiently through digital platforms.

Egerton-Idehen highlighted that the next phase would target an additional 120 local governments before the end of the year, further expanding digital inclusion.

The Role of Satellites and Media

Satellites are critical national assets that support not only connectivity but also national security, commerce, and emergency services. The CEO warned that without protecting these assets, Nigeria risks overdependence on foreign technology.

She also called on the media to report accurately on ICT developments, stating:

“You are not just talking technical jargon; you are shaping how people see opportunities in technology, influencing policymakers, and inspiring young people to innovate.”

“Every Nigerian, no matter where they live, deserves access to the internet — connectivity is the gateway to education, business, and national development.” – Mrs Jane Egerton-Idehen

NIGCOMSAT’s initiative demonstrates that digital access is a catalyst for national development. Nigerians in rural communities are encouraged to explore the benefits of internet connectivity, from education to business opportunities, and actively participate in Nigeria’s growing ICT sector.
