Nigeria Boosts Digital Growth with Africa’s Largest Fibre Cable Factory

Nigeria has taken a bold step towards digital transformation and economic independence with the commissioning of Africa’s largest fibre optic cable factory and the continent’s first fibre-reinforced plastic manufacturing facility. Built by Coleman Technical Industries Limited in Sagamu, Ogun State, this development strengthens Nigeria’s competitiveness under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and promises massive opportunities for Nigerians.

A Major Boost for Connectivity and Jobs

Inaugurated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the facility can produce up to nine million kilometres of fibre optic cables annually, helping Nigeria expand internet access across the country. It will also process 13,000 tons of copper and aluminium monthly reducing the nation’s dependence on imported materials.

According to the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Jumoke Oduwole, the factory is “a strategic national asset that strengthens the digital backbone of our economy.”

This project is expected to create over 20,000 direct jobs and 200,000 indirect jobs, opening doors for engineers, ICT experts, logistics workers, and local suppliers.

Opportunities for Nigerians

The Federal Government’s plan to deploy 90,000 kilometres of fibre nationwide means more communities—especially rural areas—will gain access to faster internet. This will benefit:

  • Students and youths: enabling better access to online education, digital skills training, and remote work opportunities.
  • Small businesses: lowering data costs and improving access to e-commerce and fintech platforms.
  • Tech startups: encouraging innovation with improved broadband and local content development.

The factory’s financing by First City Monument Bank (FCMB), Bank of Industry, and InfraCredit also shows how local funding can turn industrial vision into national progress.

“Finance can be an enabler of national progress when aligned with industrial ambition.”- FCMB’s CEO, Mrs Yemisi Edun,

Coleman’s fibre expansion is not just an industrial milestone—it’s a gateway to a more connected, productive, and inclusive Nigeria. As digital infrastructure grows, Nigerians are encouraged to equip themselves with ICT skills, explore online business opportunities, and leverage faster internet to improve education, trade, and innovation.
