Órüpézá Festival 2025: A Celebration of Culture, Creativity, and Youth

Festival Director, Edi Lawani

Lagos is preparing for another unforgettable experience as the Órüpézá Festival 2025 takes over Freedom Park, Lagos Island, from September 28 to October 2. The five-day event, which aligns with Nigeria’s Independence Day on October 1, promises an exciting mix of music, film, fashion, dance, gaming, visual arts, and food, blending tradition with modern creativity.

Last year’s edition drew massive attention, sparking conversations on identity, legacy, and community while also entertaining the crowd with afrobeat anthems, soulful ballads, spoken word, and comedy.

Honouring Legends, Inspiring Generations

In 2024, the festival introduced the Órüpézá Cultural Honours, celebrating icons like journalist Jahman Anikulapo, sculptor Bruce Onobrakpeya, and actress Taiwo Ajayi-Lycett. Their recognition highlighted the festival’s mission to bridge generations and celebrate culture as the foundation of community.

“Last year, we honoured legends who paved the way. This year, we are deepening that vision by creating more platforms for youth, communities, and new stories. The festival is about freedom, but it is also about belonging and legacy.” -festival director, Edi Lawani

Opportunities for Youth Participation

For young people, Órüpézá is more than a festival—it’s a platform. Youths can actively take part by:

Showcasing talents in music, dance, art, or fashion.

Participating in workshops and discussions on culture, creativity, and entrepreneurship.

Networking with professionals and cultural icons who can mentor and open new opportunities.

Exploring cultural innovation, such as gaming, digital arts, and storytelling, which link tradition with modern technology.

With over 20,000 participants expected, young creatives can use the event to gain visibility, share their work with a larger audience, and connect with communities that value culture and innovation.

Why It Matters for Youth

The Órüpézá Festival empowers young people to see culture not only as heritage but also as an economy and career path. It encourages creativity, entrepreneurship, and self-expression, making it a space where passion can be transformed into lasting opportunities.

Órüpézá Festival 2025 is not just about celebration—it is about belonging, learning, and creating a future rooted in culture. For youths, it’s a chance to step forward, be inspired by legends, and write their own stories on Nigeria’s cultural stage.
