Tony Elumelu Foundation Empowers 3,200 African Entrepreneurs with $16 Million in 2026
The Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF) has announced its 2026 entrepreneurship programme, committing $16 million to support 3,200 young entrepreneurs across Africa. The initiative, unveiled in Abuja at the Congress Hall of Transcorp Hilton, aims to nurture innovation, resilience, and economic growth among African youths.
Surge in Applications Shows Africa’s Entrepreneurial Spirit
The CEO of the Foundation, Somachi Chris-Asoluka, revealed that the 2026 programme saw an overwhelming response from across the continent.

Chris-Asoluka emphasized that the programme serves as a platform for nurturing young entrepreneurs in all 54 African countries, providing mentorship, networking opportunities, and seed funding to turn ideas into sustainable businesses.
Phased Funding Through Strategic Partnerships
The Foundation will release funding in phases through partnerships with private and international organizations:
- 1,951 entrepreneurs will be supported through Heirs Holdings Group and other partners.
- 100 entrepreneurs in May will benefit from collaborations with the IKEA Foundation, Generation Unlimited of UNICEF, and the Dutch Government.
- 100 entrepreneurs in August will receive support via the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Government of Rwanda.
- 1,049 entrepreneurs will emerge from collaborations with the European Union, OACPS, BMZ, and GIZ.
Since 2015, TEF has disbursed over $100 million to 24,000 entrepreneurs, creating 1.5 million jobs, generating $4.2 billion in revenue, lifting 2.1 million Africans above the poverty line, and positively impacting 4.1 million households.

Founder Tony Elumelu stressed that the programme is about more than funding: it is part of a broader mission to drive economic transformation.
“What we do… is about improving lives and transforming society. Supporting small and medium-scale enterprises is critical to tackling unemployment across the continent,” he said.
Elumelu highlighted Africapitalism, the philosophy behind the Foundation, which emphasizes inclusive prosperity and shared economic growth.
