World Bank: Smarter Water Use Could Create 245 million Jobs by 2050
A new report by the World Bank Group reveals that better management of water in agriculture could create up to 245 million long-term jobs globally, with many opportunities expected in sub-Saharan Africa.
The report, titled “Nourish and Flourish: Water Solutions to Feed 10 Billion People on a Livable Planet,” highlights how smarter water use can help feed the world’s growing population, projected to reach 10 billion by 2050.
Why Current Systems Are Failing
According to the report, today’s farming systems are inefficient:
Some regions overuse water, leading to waste
Others lack enough water, reducing productivity
As a result, current agricultural practices can only sustainably feed less than half of the global population.
The Solution: Smarter Water + Better Farming
The World Bank Group recommends:
Rebalancing water distribution across regions
Growing crops in areas where they perform best
Improving irrigation systems
Strengthening global food trade systems
“The way we manage water for food will have profound implications for jobs, livelihoods, and economic growth,” said Paschal Donohoe.
Investment and Growth Potential
To make this work, the report estimates that:
Between $24 billion and $70 billion is needed yearly for irrigation upgrades
Governments already spend $490 billion annually on agriculture, which can be redirected
More private sector investment is needed
The World Bank also plans to:
Increase agribusiness funding to $9 billion annually by 2030
Mobilize $5 billion yearly through its AgriConnect initiative

Why This Matters for the Future
Efficient water use is becoming a key driver of global development. It affects:
Food availability
Job creation
Climate sustainability
Economic growth
“When investments in infrastructure, policies, and private capital come together, the impact can be greater than the sum of their parts,” said Guangzhe Chen.
The message is clear: water is the future of food and jobs. With the right policies, investments, and skills, millions of people — especially in Africa — can benefit from this transformation.
For young Nigerians and entrepreneurs, this is a goldmine opportunity to enter agriculture, build sustainable businesses, and secure long-term income.
