Shaping the Future Through STEM Education

The ExxonMobil Foundation, in partnership with Junior Achievement Africa, has launched its 2025 STEM Africa Programme, aimed at empowering over 1,500 secondary school students across Nigeria, Angola, Namibia, and Mozambique. The initiative, launched in Abuja, Nigeria, is designed to build a generation of digitally skilled and innovative youth ready to drive development in Africa. 

The programme includes weekly STEM quizzes, regional competitions, and innovation camps, all aimed at enhancing critical thinking, collaboration, and real-world problem-solving among students. 

Equipping Students with Real-World Skills 

Executive Director of Junior Achievement Nigeria, Ugonna Achebe, explained that this year’s initiative is targeting a completely new batch of students. This strategy helps maximize reach and impact. 

    “Our aim is to ensure that we improve students’ critical thinking and collaboration skills. It’s what we feed the students that enables them to grow and make a real impact in our nations,” Achebe said. 

He added that the goal is to raise digitally savvy leaders who are prepared for careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. 

Tackling Gender Gaps and Sparking Interest

Nigel Cookey-Gam, who represented the Managing Director of ExxonMobil Nigeria, noted that the foundation is focused on increasing interest in STEM, especially among girls, who often shy away from such fields. 

    “It’s not just about winning; it’s about exposure and helping students develop confidence in STEM,” he said. 

So far, the programme has reached over 6,000 students in Africa. In Nigeria alone, participants saw a 212% improvement in STEM knowledge, showcasing the programme’s strong impact. 

The most outstanding students will be given the chance to represent Nigeria at a regional industry conference in South Africa, further expanding their exposure. 

The ExxonMobil STEM Africa Programme is more than a training initiative — it is an investment in Africa’s future. By equipping students with problem-solving skills and exposure to real-life STEM applications, the programme is helping to raise a new generation of leaders who are ready to innovate and drive change in their communities.
