Nigeria to Train 20 million Youth in Digital Skills by 2030: How You Can Benefit

Nigeria has launched a bold plan to train 20 million young people in digital skills by 2030. This effort aims to boost youth employment and prepare the country for growth in the global digital economy. The initiative was announced by the Vice President’s office after a meeting with United Nations officials in Abuja.

What the Program Offers

The training program is part of Generation Unlimited Nigeria (GenU 9JA), a partnership between the Nigerian government and UNICEF. It focuses on three main areas:

Digital Connectivity: Improving access to digital tools and the internet.

Pathways from Learning to Earning: Helping youth turn their digital skills into real job opportunities.

Youth Empowerment: Supporting young people to take charge of their futures.

“This initiative opens a window of opportunities for our young people. If we want to thrive in a fast-changing world, we must empower our youth through digital skills. -Vice Prsident Kashim Shettima”

Progress So Far

Since the program’s launch in 2022, more than 10 million Nigerian youths have accessed digital training. Over 1,500 participants have already secured jobs thanks to the initiative. UNICEF officials confirmed Nigeria is among the top countries globally making an impact on youth digital skills development.

Why This Matters

Despite progress, a 2023 survey by Nigerian edtech company GetBundi showed that over 100 million Nigerian youths still lack basic digital literacy. Many graduates only know basic computer skills like Microsoft Excel, with few trained in advanced skills such as programming or data science.

This digital skills gap limits job prospects for young Nigerians, especially as the world moves rapidly towards technology-based work.

How You Can Benefit

Join Free Training Programs: Nigeria’s Digital Nigeria Programme and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) offer free online courses in digital skills and emerging technologies.

Use GenU 9JA Platforms: Keep an eye on opportunities and resources shared by GenU 9JA to access training and job placements.

Upgrade Your Skills Continuously: Focus on learning practical digital skills like coding, data analysis, and digital marketing to increase your employability.

Network and Seek Mentorship: Connect with digital professionals and organizations to learn about internships, apprenticeships, and job openings.

Nigeria’s drive to train 20 million youth in digital skills is a huge step toward a brighter future. By taking advantage of available programs and committing to learning, young Nigerians can gain the skills needed to thrive in today’s digital world and secure meaningful employment.
