Elumelu Urges Nigerians to Keep Faith in Democracy Amid Challenges
As Nigeria commemorates Democracy Day on June 12, former Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, has called on Nigerians to remain hopeful and committed to democratic values, despite the nation’s ongoing challenges.
In a statement personally signed and shared with journalists in Warri, Elumelu applauded the resilience of Nigerians who continue to uphold democratic ideals. He described democracy as a “priceless national possession that must be cherished and protected.”
Honoring the Sacrifices of Democratic Heroes
Elumelu paid tribute to the many Nigerians who fought hard, and in some cases, gave their lives to establish democracy in the country. He said their sacrifices must not be forgotten, urging citizens to remember the journey that brought about the freedom to elect leaders and participate in governance.
“Our democracy is a product of the sacrifices of many,” Elumelu said. “I appreciate the leaders who fought hard and even paid the supreme price to bring about this precious gift.”
Commending Leaders for People-Oriented Governance
Elumelu also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his Renewed Hope agenda and Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for the MORE Agenda, which focus on people-centred development. He extended commendations to Council Chairmen in Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency for their grassroots efforts in delivering democratic dividends through projects and programmes.
He described their actions as proof of what democratic governance should look like when leadership is focused on the people’s welfare.
“As we mark this significant day, I urge all citizens to continue to have faith in our democracy and to remain committed to the ideals of democratic governance despite the challenges we are facing as a country.” — Hon. Ndudi Elumelu
Elumelu’s message serves as a reminder that democracy thrives only when citizens actively participate, remain hopeful, and hold leaders accountable. While challenges persist, the continuous efforts of leaders and citizens alike are necessary to protect the democratic gains made so far.
