University of Calabar Joins OPay’s ₦1.2 Billion Scholarship Scheme: What It Means for Nigerian Students
The University of Calabar has become the latest institution to benefit from OPay’s ₦1.2 billion 10-year scholarship programme, making it the eighth university to be included in the initiative. This partnership is aimed at supporting students with financial aid while promoting academic excellence and youth development across Nigeria.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed at a ceremony attended by top OPay officials, university leadership, and students. The scholarship programme is designed to run for a decade, providing long-term educational assistance.
A Lifeline for Students
Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi, praised the initiative, describing it as a much-needed boost for students.
“OPay’s generosity is deeply appreciated. This scholarship will inspire and support our students to do better academically,” she said.
The scholarships will offer financial relief to students from low-income families and help them focus on their studies without worrying about school fees or other basic academic needs.
More Than Just Money
According to Mr. IK Odiase, Head of Partnerships at OPay, the programme is part of a broader mission to empower young Nigerians through access to quality education.
“Education is the cornerstone of nation-building, and we remain committed to ensuring that students across Nigeria have the support they need to succeed,” he stated.
OPay also noted that this effort goes beyond financial aid — it is about creating opportunities, inspiring excellence, and driving change in communities by supporting students who are likely to become future leaders.
“This scholarship programme is more than financial aid — it’s an investment in the dreams and potential of Nigerian students.” — IK Odiase, Head of Partnerships at OPay
How to Benefit
Students in universities already part of the scholarship programme — like the University of Calabar — are encouraged to check with their student affairs division or school scholarship board for application details and eligibility criteria. As OPay expands the initiative, students in other institutions should stay updated through campus announcements or OPay’s official platforms.
OPay’s scholarship initiative is more than just corporate social responsibility — it’s an investment in Nigeria’s future. Students should take advantage of such opportunities to lessen financial burdens and remain focused on academic and personal development.
