Lagos Distributes 8 million Free Clean Cookstoves to Tackle Health and Poverty — Here’s How You Can Benefit

The Lagos State Government has launched a bold environmental and health-focused initiative to distribute 8 million clean cookstoves across all 57 Local Government Areas and LCDAs — starting with Makoko. This move is part of the larger 80 million Clean Cookstoves Project, aimed at improving household health, reducing air pollution, and tackling deforestation.

The project is executed in partnership with Green Plinth Africa and comes at no cost to households, especially in rural, semi-urban, and underserved urban areas where firewood is commonly used.

How You Benefit

1. Free Cookstoves:

If you’re in Lagos, especially in low-income communities, you may receive a clean cookstove for free. These stoves are designed to cook faster, use less fuel, and eliminate dangerous smoke that causes asthma and eye irritation.

2. Better Health:

Traditional cooking methods produce smoke that causes respiratory problems. These clean stoves burn agricultural waste (like sawdust or rice husks), making cooking safer for families, especially women and children.

3. Job Opportunities:

Green Plinth will set up brisket (biofuel) factories in all states, creating jobs in production and distribution. Youth and women can also be trained in biofuel production and stove maintenance.

4. Community Development:

Lagos State aims to generate $1 billion in carbon credit revenue through the Lagos Carbon Exchange (LCX). This money will fund more public services, like roads, schools, and health care.

This project is not just about cooking — it’s about dignity, health, and a better future for our people. With every stove distributed, we’re lighting the fire of change in Lagos.”

Why This Matters

“This is more than a demonstration — we are unveiling a treasure that cooks faster, cleaner and safer. One that saves lives, one that saves the planet,” said Mrs. Titilayo Oshodi, Special Adviser to Governor Sanwo-Olu on Climate Change.
