INEC Fixes February 20, 2027, for Nigeria’s Presidential Election

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Joash Amupitan.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially announced that Nigeria’s presidential and National Assembly elections will hold on February 20, 2027.

Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will follow on March 6, 2027.

The announcement was made in Abuja by INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, during a press briefing.

What positions will be contested

According to INEC, the elections will cover:

President and Vice President

Governors and Deputy Governors (except in Anambra, Bayelsa, Edo, Ekiti, Imo, Kogi, Ondo and Osun states)

Members of the Senate

Members of the House of Representatives

Members of State Houses of Assembly

INEC explained that the timetable was released in line with the Constitution and the Electoral Act, which require the commission to publish a notice of election not later than 360 days before polling day.

Why INEC released the timetable early

The commission said the early announcement shows its commitment to a transparent and credible electoral process. A detailed schedule of activities has also been published on INEC’s website and shared with political parties and stakeholders, including the National Assembly.

“The timely announcement of the election date is a critical step, allowing political parties, civil society organisations and the electorate to prepare adequately.”

INEC also acknowledged concerns surrounding the delay in the passage of the amended Electoral Act, noting that while future amendments may improve the process, the commission must operate under the existing law.

What political parties and voters should expect

INEC confirmed that:

party primaries will be held within the period allowed by law,

nomination of candidates will follow the approved window, and

campaign activities will begin and end strictly according to legal timelines, stopping 24 hours before election day.

Political parties have been warned to comply fully, as INEC will enforce all statutory requirements.

Conclusion

As Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general elections, INEC is calling on political parties, security agencies, the media, civil society groups and citizens to work together to ensure peaceful and credible polls. For voters, this announcement provides a clear timeline to prepare, engage and participate responsibly in shaping Nigeria’s future.
