Residents receiving relief materials at the Yobe State Government House in Damaturu.
The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction has begun the distribution of food and nutrition items to over 42,000 vulnerable people across the 17 Local Government Areas of Yobe State.
The exercise is part of the Presidential Emergency Food and Nutrition Intervention Programme, created to fight hunger, malnutrition and rising poverty, especially in communities affected by conflict and economic hardship.
The official flag-off took place at the Government House in Damaturu.
Who is organising the distribution?
The intervention is coordinated by the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency in collaboration with the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria.
The state government, led by Mai Mala Buni, also approved Ramadan palliatives to support vulnerable households during the holy month.
Who can benefit from this programme?
According to the Minister of State, Yusuf Sununu, the programme is specially targeted at:
Internally displaced persons (IDPs)
Poor and vulnerable households
Female-headed families
Malnourished children
Elderly persons
Persons living with disabilities
Returning and host community families
Truckloads of rice, beans, millet, maize, grains, palm oil, cooking oil, tomatoes, seasoning and salt are being shared across all 17 LGAs.
How to become a beneficiary in your community
Residents who qualify do not need to apply online. Beneficiaries are identified through:
Your local government council office
Your ward or community leaders
Local records managed by SEMA and social welfare officers
To increase your chance of benefiting:
Register or update your household details with your ward head or LGA secretariat.
Inform your community leader if your household includes an elderly person, a person with disability, or a malnourished child.
Follow announcements from your local council and distribution centres in your area.
“This intervention is part of a broader national strategy to strengthen social protection and help families move from emergency support to sustainable livelihoods,” Sununu said.
Governor Buni added:
“Providing food to vulnerable citizens is not merely an act of charity; it is a responsibility and an investment in a better future.”
The programme reflects the humanitarian commitment of the Federal Government under Bola Tinubu.
For struggling households in Yobe, this food and nutrition support can ease daily pressure and improve health, especially during Ramadan. Community registration and local coordination remain the safest way to benefit.
