Tinubu Expands CNG Initiative to Electric Vehicles: What It Means for Nigerians
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu
Nigeria is taking a bold step towards cleaner and more affordable transportation as Bola Ahmed Tinubu approves the expansion of the Presidential CNG initiative to include electric vehicles.
New Name, Bigger Vision
The initiative will now be known as the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (PiCNG & EV).
According to Bayo Onanuga, the updated programme will drive Nigeria’s transition to clean, affordable, and sustainable mobility.
This means the government will now focus on:
Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles
Electric vehicles (EVs)
Nationwide infrastructure for both energy types
️ Expansion of Infrastructure and Access
Under the new mandate, the initiative will:
Develop EV charging stations across Nigeria
Expand CNG refuelling stations (Mother & Daughter Stations)
Deploy Mobile Refuelling Units for easier access
Increase vehicle conversion centres nationwide
This will make it easier for Nigerians to switch from petrol to cheaper and cleaner energy options.
Affordable Conversion for Nigerians
One of the key highlights is the government’s plan to make vehicle conversion affordable and accessible.
The initiative will collaborate with CreditCorp Nigeria and other financial institutions to:
Provide flexible payment plans
Reduce the cost of conversion kits
Support mass adoption of CNG vehicles
Why This Matters
Nigeria has over 200 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, making CNG a cheaper alternative to petrol.
With the addition of electric vehicles, Nigerians can expect:
Lower transportation costs
Reduced fuel scarcity issues
Cleaner environment (less pollution)
Improved energy security
“PiCNG & EV will lead and coordinate Nigeria’s clean mobility strategy, covering gas-driven vehicles and electric vehicles nationwide.”
Government’s Long-Term Plan
The initiative, originally launched in 2023, aims to:
Convert one million vehicles to CNG
Reduce dependence on petrol after subsidy removal
Promote sustainable energy solutions
The inclusion of EVs now positions Nigeria among countries embracing future mobility solutions.
The expansion of the CNG initiative to include electric vehicles is a major step towards affordable transportation, economic relief, and environmental sustainability in Nigeria.
For everyday Nigerians, this could mean cheaper transport fares, new job opportunities, and a cleaner future.
