Lagos Ferry Safety Development Programme: How Nigerians Can Benefit from the New Maritime Training Initiative
The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), in partnership with Interferry, has officially commenced the practical phase of the Lagos Ferry Safety Development Programme. The first physical training session was recently held at the Caverton Marine Ferry Building Facility in Badore, Ajah, Lagos.
The initiative is designed to improve ferry safety, enhance technical knowledge, and promote operational excellence within Nigeria’s growing waterways transportation sector.
What Is the Lagos Ferry Safety Development Programme?
The Lagos Ferry Safety Development Programme is an 18-month capacity-building initiative aimed at improving safety standards and professional competence in the ferry and inland waterways industry.
According to LASWA, the programme seeks to:
Strengthen technical expertise in ferry operations
Improve vessel safety standards
Promote proper maintenance practices
Build a strong safety culture among operators
Support the growth of Lagos’ blue economy
The programme is regarded as Africa’s first dedicated Ferry Safety Development Programme, highlighting Lagos State’s commitment to safer and more efficient water transportation.
50 Participants Trained in Ferry Design and Safety
The inaugural practical session brought together 50 participants who received hands-on training in key areas of ferry operations.
The training covered:

Participants also benefited from practical demonstrations and expert guidance from experienced maritime professionals.
Industry Expert Shares Over 40 Years of Experience
One of the highlights of the programme was a technical session facilitated by Caverton Marine’s General Manager, Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim.
Drawing from more than four decades of experience in ferry design and construction, Ibrahim educated participants on vessel construction standards, maintenance requirements, and critical safety measures needed to ensure safe ferry operations.
Why This Programme Matters
The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Blue Economy, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, explained that practical training is essential for building a safer waterways sector.
