Oyo School Abduction: How Security Forces Rescued Pupils and Teachers After 56 Days in Captivity
The freed pupils and teachers.
After 56 days in captivity, pupils and teachers abducted from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have regained their freedom in what Nigerian authorities described as a successful intelligence-led security operation. The rescue has brought relief to families, schools, and communities that had waited anxiously since the victims were kidnapped on May 15, 2026.
How the Rescue Happened
According to Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, security agencies carried out a coordinated operation that secured the victims’ release without accepting the kidnappers’ demand for the release of a terrorism suspect. During the operation, eight suspected kidnappers were arrested, while several others were neutralised. The suspects are currently in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
The Nigerian Army later confirmed that the rescued pupils and teachers were receiving medical attention before being reunited with their families and handed over to the Oyo State Government. The operation involved multiple security agencies, including the military, DSS, police, intelligence services, Amotekun, local vigilantes, and hunters.
Communities Celebrate the Victims’ Return
The victims’ release sparked celebrations across Ogbomoso and surrounding communities. Residents, commercial motorcyclists, travellers, and families expressed gratitude after weeks of uncertainty.
Political leaders and stakeholders also welcomed the rescue while urging the Federal Government to strengthen security measures to prevent future school abductions. They emphasized the need to rescue other Nigerians still in captivity and ensure that those responsible for the act face justice.
“The successful rescue brings hope to affected families, but it also highlights the urgent need for stronger security around schools and vulnerable communities.”
Why This Rescue Matters
The Oyo school abduction rescue is one of Nigeria’s most significant rescue operations this year. While the safe return of the victims is widely celebrated, the incident underscores the continuing security challenges facing schools and rural communities across the country.
The successful rescue of the abducted pupils and teachers marks the end of a painful 56-day ordeal for dozens of families. Although the operation has been widely praised, security experts and community leaders agree that sustained investment in intelligence, school protection, and rapid emergency response will be essential to prevent similar incidents in the future.
