PenCom Extends Pension Verification Deadline to December 31, 2026

By Adetutu A, The Insights 17 September 2026 6

The National Pension Commission (PenCom) has extended the deadline for the online verification and enrolment of eligible Federal Government workers to December 31, 2026. The exercise is important for workers who have accrued pension rights from service before the introduction of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).

According to PenCom, the exercise helps establish workers accrued pension entitlements, determine government’s pension liabilities and facilitate the eventual crediting of verified benefits into eligible workers Retirement Savings Accounts (RSAs).

Who Can Benefit?

The exercise covers active employees of Federal Government Treasury-funded MDAs who were in service as of June 30, 2004, subject to the applicable verification requirements.

“Early enrolment” can help ensure eligible accrued pension rights are properly established before retirement.

How to Complete the Pension Verification

Step 1: Confirm your eligibility. Check with your organisation’s Pension Desk Officer/HR department to confirm that you fall within the eligible category.

Step 2: Ensure your employment details are uploaded. Your MDA is responsible for uploading eligible employee information through PenCom’s COBRA platform.

Step 3: Confirm your pension records. Eligible workers must work with their Pension Fund Administrator (PFA) and provide the required employment and identification documents for verification.

Step 4: Complete enrolment with your PFA. Visit your PFA as directed and submit the required documents. PenCom’s guidelines state that PFAs are responsible for conducting the verification and enrolment process.

Step 5: Keep your confirmation/records. After completing the process, retain relevant confirmation and pension documents for future reference.

Why This Matters

Completing the pension verification allows eligible accrued rights to be properly determined. Once verified and funded, the accrued amount can be credited to the worker’s RSA, where it can contribute to retirement benefits and potentially earn investment returns.

Deadline: December 31, 2026. Eligible workers should contact their MDA’s Pension Desk Officer or PFA early rather than waiting until the deadline.

If you are an eligible Federal Government employee covered by the accrued pension rights provisions, use the extension to complete your verification and enrolment. Proper documentation today can help ensure your eligible pension rights are established ahead of retirement.
