The Mandela Washington Fellowship 2027 is open to young African leaders, including eligible Nigerians, offering a six-week leadership development programme in the United States.
The programme is the flagship initiative of the U.S. Government’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) and provides selected participants with valuable leadership training, professional development and networking opportunities.
What Does the Fellowship Offer?
Selected Fellows participate in a six-week Leadership Institute at a U.S. college or university. The programme covers eligible programme costs, accommodation, meals, required travel, and J-1 visa support.
Fellows also become part of a network of young African leaders and may have opportunities for additional professional development.

Who Can Apply?
Eligible Nigerian citizens and residents can apply. Applicants should generally be 25–35 years old by October 13, 2026, although exceptional candidates aged 21–24 may be considered.
Applicants must demonstrate leadership, community involvement or professional achievement, have English proficiency and meet the programme’s other eligibility and visa requirements.
