Abia State Governor, Alex Otti

The Abia State Government has shortlisted 24,023 applicants for the computer-Based Test (CBT) in the second batch of its teacher recruitment exercise, as part of plans to employ 4,000 new teachers across the state.

The announcement was made after the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Alex Otti, and disclosed by the Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, during a press briefing at Government House, Umuahia.

CBT update and how applicants should prepare

According to the government, about 36,415 applications were received, out of which 24,023 candidates were shortlisted for the CBT.

“At the last count, about 36,415 applications were received, while 24,023 applicants were shortlisted for the computer-Based Test (CBT). The date for the CBT will be announced in due course,” — Okey Kanu.

Applicants are advised to stay alert for official announcements and prepare for the test, as the exercise will determine who will be selected for the 4,000 teaching positions.

More teachers, better schools

The state also confirmed that 5,394 teachers were employed last year, while this new phase targets an additional 4,000 teachers to strengthen learning in public schools.

To improve school planning and accountability, Abia is introducing the Education Management and Information System (EMIS). According to the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Goodluck Ubochi, the system will help track pupils’ progress and movement across public and private schools.

Adult learning and youth development programmes return

The government announced the resumption of its mass literacy and non-formal education programme for the 2025–2026 academic session across all 17 local government areas.

The programme targets school dropouts, traders, artisans and other adults who want to improve their reading, writing and basic education skills.

On sports, Abia’s school team recently emerged the best in athletics and overall performance, winning eight gold medals at the National Basic Education Schools Sports Games.

Strong education results and ongoing infrastructure works

The state noted that Abia has emerged as the best-performing state in the NECO examinations for the past three years. Road rehabilitation projects are also ongoing in several communities, including Bende, Ikwuano and Isialangwa South LGAs.

This recruitment exercise and education reforms present real opportunities for qualified job seekers, young graduates and adult learners in Abia State. Interested applicants and community members are encouraged to follow official government updates and take advantage of the adult literacy programmes when registration opens.
