EKEDC Warns Customers Against Cyber Threats: Stay Vigilant Online

EKEDC’s Commitment to Customer Safety

The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has raised alarm over the growing wave of cyber threats targeting its customers. In a public advisory signed by the General Manager of Corporate Communications, Babatunde Lasaki, the company emphasized the urgent need for heightened cybersecurity awareness amidst the increasing reliance on digital platforms for transactions and communication.

Common Cyber Threats to Watch Out For

Lasaki identified several cyber threats customers should be aware of, including phishing attacks, social engineering scams, ransomware attacks, and identity theft. He explained how these threats are used by fraudsters to exploit vulnerabilities:

    Phishing Attacks:

Fraudsters send deceptive emails, text messages, or make phone calls to trick individuals into sharing sensitive information such as account details, passwords, or payment data.

    Social Engineering Scams:

Cybercriminals exploit human emotions, manipulating victims by impersonating EKEDC officials or posing as family members in distress to extract confidential financial details or payments.

    Ransomware Attacks:

Malicious software locks users out of their devices or files, with attackers demanding ransom to restore access. These attacks often happen when users unknowingly download infected files or click on malicious links.

    Identity Theft:

Attackers steal personal information such as National Identification Numbers, bank details, or passwords, using them for fraudulent activities. Hackers often exploit weak or reused passwords to gain unauthorized access to accounts.

EKEDC’s Cybersecurity Tips for Customers

To protect against these threats, EKEDC urged customers to adopt the following best practices:

    Verify Communication Authenticity:

Always double-check emails, SMS, or calls claiming to be from EKEDC. Official communications will never request sensitive details like passwords or PINs.

    Create Strong Passwords:

Use unique, strong passwords that cannot be easily guessed. Avoid using names, birth dates, or sequential numbers.

    Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA):

Add an extra layer of protection to online accounts by enabling MFA, which requires a second form of verification in addition to a password.

    Keep Devices Updated:

Regularly update devices and applications to ensure the latest security patches are installed.

    Avoid Public Wi-Fi for Transactions:

Use secure, private networks for online transactions, as public Wi-Fi networks are often unsecure and expose sensitive information to attackers.

Be Cautious with Links and Attachments:

Do not click on unknown links or download unsolicited attachments, as they may contain malware or phishing traps.

Cybersecurity is a shared responsibility. Staying vigilant and adopting safe practices online can protect you and those around you from falling victim to cyber threats.” – Babatunde Lasaki, General Manager, Corporate Communications, EKEDC
