FG Opens 2026 Overseas Scholarships for Nigerian Postgraduate Students

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially opened applications for the 2026 Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) Overseas Scholarship Scheme, giving Nigerian postgraduate students the chance to study abroad in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Malaysia. 

This announcement was confirmed by Dada Olusegun, Special Adviser to the President on social media, via X (formerly Twitter) on Monday: 

“FG has announced the commencement of applications for 2026 PTDF Scholarships overseas.” 

Who Can Apply? 

The scholarships are open to MSc and PhD candidates in fields relevant to the oil and gas sector. They are highly competitive, and only candidates demonstrating outstanding merit and suitability will be considered. Applicants will be evaluated on: 

  • Academic qualifications and transcripts 
  • Research proposals 
  • Membership in professional bodies 
  • Relevance of their studies to Nigeria’s oil and gas industry 

MSc Requirements: 

  • Minimum of Second-Class Lower (2.2) or 2.1 in a first degree 
  • Completion of NYSC programme 
  • Computer literacy 
  • Five O’Level credits, including English and Mathematics 

PhD Requirements: 

  • Submission of a research proposal (up to five pages) detailing objectives, methodology, and data collection 
  • For UK candidates, a split-site arrangement allows research between the College of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Kaduna (CPESK) and partner universities like Robert Gordon University, University of Strathclyde, and University of Portsmouth 

What the Scholarship Covers 

The PTDF scholarship offers a comprehensive package, including: 

  • Tuition fees 
  • Return flight tickets 
  • Accommodation and living allowances 
  • Health insurance 
  • Bench fees (where applicable) 

According to PTDF, the scheme aims to provide “access to world-class training, research facilities, and global expertise, while developing indigenous capacity in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector” 

How to Apply 

  • Applicants must verify their National Identity Number (NIN) before applying 
  • Multiple applications or falsified documents will lead to automatic disqualification 
  • Closing date: 27th February 2026
