The Lagos State Government has reiterated its dedication to empowering women entrepreneurs through targeted initiatives aimed at fostering financial independence and business sustainability.
Government’s Commitment to Women’s Economic Growth
At an empowerment programme held in Lagos on Thursday, stakeholders from government, business, and local communities emphasized the critical role of female entrepreneurs in driving economic growth and reducing poverty. The event highlighted the need for continuous government intervention to address challenges such as limited access to funding, market penetration, and business management skills.
Delivering the keynote address, Adesola Jimmy-Eboma, founder of FreshOla Organics, stressed that women are key players in Nigeria’s economic development. However, many struggle due to inadequate resources. She commended the Lagos State Government’s empowerment initiatives, which provide women with the opportunity to scale their businesses and contribute meaningfully to the economy.
Government Initiatives to Support Female Entrepreneurs
The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade, and Investment, Hauwa Adeeyo, reaffirmed the administration’s efforts in creating an enabling environment for women-owned businesses. According to her, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration remains committed to equipping women with essential tools through skill acquisition programmes, financial aid, and business support services.
Adeeyo noted that several interventions had been launched to reduce poverty among women. She highlighted financial inclusion and cooperative models as key strategies for improving access to capital for female entrepreneurs.
When women are empowered, families thrive, businesses grow, and communities prosper. Supporting female entrepreneurs is not just about financial aid; it’s about building a stronger economy for all.” – Rekiah Hassan
Local Government and Private Sector Collaboration
Rekiah Hassan, Chairman of the Onigbongbo Local Council Development Area, emphasized the importance of grassroots involvement in empowering women economically. She stated that when women are supported, families thrive, children receive better education, and communities experience overall development.
Hassan called on corporate organizations and financial institutions to collaborate with the government in expanding financial access for women. She stressed that sustainable economic growth could be achieved when women-owned businesses receive adequate support.
The Lagos State Government’s continuous support for women entrepreneurs is a significant step toward financial empowerment and economic growth. However, collaboration between the government, private sector, and financial institutions is necessary to ensure long-term success. By leveraging training, funding, and networking opportunities, female entrepreneurs in Lagos can build sustainable businesses that contribute to the nation’s progress.
