ICAN Inducts Over 2,000 New Accountants, Urges Ethical Leadership and Lifelong Learning
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has inducted over 2,000 new members in a grand ceremony held at the ICAN Centre, Lagos. The event marked a major milestone for the inductees, many of whom celebrated the achievement with family and friends after years of hard work and sacrifice.
With this new addition, ICAN’s membership has grown to 69,903, strengthening the body’s role in shaping financial integrity across Nigeria.
Leaders Emphasise Ethics, Discipline, and Competence
In his address, ICAN President Mallam Haruna Yahaya commended the new accountants for their perseverance, noting that their achievement reflects discipline, courage, and commitment.
“This moment is not just a milestone; it is a testament to your courage, discipline, and commitment to greatness,” -Yahaya said.
He urged the inductees to uphold professionalism and integrity, especially when handling sensitive financial information. Yahaya stressed that unethical behaviour, even once, can result in serious legal and financial consequences. He encouraged them to deepen their knowledge by joining any of ICAN’s eight professional faculties, such as taxation, audit, corporate finance, and public financial management.
The Special Guest of Honour, former CBN Deputy Governor Alhaji Suleiman Barau, highlighted the essential role accountants play in governance. He urged the new professionals to resist pressures that may compromise their work and to act as protectors of public trust.
Recognising Excellence and Taking the Oath
The ceremony featured the presentation of the Star Prize to Emmanuel Oluwaseyi for emerging as the best qualifying candidate. Several other awards sponsored by organisations and individuals were also presented to encourage academic excellence.
Inductees took the Oath of Allegiance, pledging to uphold the ICAN Act and maintain the highest standards of professional conduct.
A Call to Serve and Lead
Dignitaries, past presidents, council members and officials graced the occasion, reinforcing ICAN’s strong legacy and global affiliations, including membership in the International Federation of Accountants.
The 2025 ICAN induction ceremony served not only as a celebration but also as a reminder of the crucial role accountants play in Nigeria’s development. As these new professionals begin their journey, they are encouraged to uphold ethics, pursue continuous learning, and contribute to transparency and economic growth.
