The Lagos State Government plans to increase electricity supply to more than 3,000 megawatts (MW) by March 2027, up from less than 1,000MW currently. The initiative aims to reduce blackouts, support businesses, and create a 24-hour economy. reported the announcement on October 11, 2026.

How Lagos Plans to Improve Electricity Supply

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said the state intends to mobilize an additional 2,000MW through national grid supply, independent power projects, energy hubs, power barges and embedded generation.

The plan also includes upgrading substations, improving distribution networks, expanding electricity metering, and using digital technology to monitor power supply. However, achieving the target will depend on effective implementation and reliable gas supplies to power plants.

“Our ambition is to move from below 1,000MW today to well above 3,000MW by March 2027,” the governor said.

How Residents, Businesses and Job Seekers Can Benefit

1. Small business owners: More reliable electricity could reduce spending on generators and fuel, improve productivity, and help businesses operate for longer hours.

2. Job seekers: Expansion projects may create opportunities in electrical engineering, solar energy, metering, construction, maintenance and energy technology. Monitor verified vacancies from energy companies and contractors.

3. Entrepreneurs and investors: Solar installation, energy-efficient equipment and electricity-related services may offer business opportunities as the market develops.

4. Residents: Better electricity supply and wider meter coverage could improve household convenience and billing transparency. Actual benefits will depend on local network improvements.

How to Take Advantage of the Opportunity

  • Follow announcements from the Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC).
  • Check official company career pages for energy-sector jobs and internships.
  • Research business opportunities and verify licenses, costs, and requirements before investing.
  • Keep electricity bills and meter records and contact your distribution company about billing or supply complaints.

Lagos’s 3,000MW electricity target could create economic opportunities for residents, entrepreneurs, and job seekers. However, the target is a government plan, not a guarantee of uninterrupted power. Follow official updates to identify genuine opportunities as projects progress.
