LEAP Africa and Mastercard Foundation Empower Over 1,200 Young Africans for Career Success

In a powerful collaboration to address youth unemployment in Africa, LEAP Africa and the Mastercard Foundation have successfully placed over 1,200 young Africans in meaningful work experiences across 15 countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Kenya, and Senegal — all under the Mastercard Foundation Associates Programme.

The achievement was highlighted during a networking event held in Lagos, where stakeholders gathered to discuss progress and expand impact. The programme, launched to help young people gain relevant workplace experience, is already proving to be a game-changer.

Why This Matters: Tackling Youth Unemployment Head-On

Africa faces a growing employment crisis, with over 10 million young people entering the job market each year — yet only a small portion secure formal employment. Many lack the skills employers are looking for, which creates a huge gap between available talent and job opportunities.

To bridge this gap, the Mastercard Foundation Associates Programme offers:

    Real-world job placements

    Mentorship opportunities

    Skill-building experiences

    Exposure to professional networks

“We’re not just creating jobs — we’re building futures. The Mastercard Foundation Associates Programme is proof that with the right support, Africa’s youth can lead the continent’s transformation.” – Kehinde Ayeni, Executive Director, LEAP Africa.

Career guidance and support

This initiative is preparing young professionals not just for jobs, but for long-term career growth and economic empowerment.

Voices of Impact: Real Experiences, Real Growth

The Executive Director of LEAP Africa, Kehinde Ayeni, spoke on the programme’s deeper impact beyond job placement:

“Africa’s youth are the driving force behind economic transformation. This programme builds career pathways that lead to long-term fulfilment. We’ve seen associates grow in skills, networks, and confidence.”

The event also featured a panel session with employers and associates. Toluwani Aina, Programme Coordinator at Jobberman, shared:

“The talent emerging from this programme is outstanding. These young professionals have shown strong work ethics and adaptability. It’s been transformative for our organisation.”

Testimonials from Associates

Many young participants shared how the programme has changed their lives. Elizabeth Ajiboye, one of the Mastercard Foundation Associates, shared:

“This programme has opened doors I never thought possible. I’ve received mentorship, built networks, and gained the confidence to pursue bigger opportunities.”

Expanding Across Africa

The initiative isn’t just limited to Nigeria. Similar networking and impact events are taking place in Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, and Senegal, showing a strong, unified African effort to tackle youth unemployment through collaboration and skills development.

The LEAP Africa and Mastercard Foundation Associates Programme is more than a job placement initiative — it’s a platform that equips young Africans with the tools, confidence, and exposure they need to succeed. By building sustainable career paths and preparing the youth for leadership in various industries, this programme is shaping a brighter future for Africa’s workforce.

If you’re a young African seeking to grow professionally, or an organisation looking to nurture future talent, this is a programme worth connecting with. The next opportunity could be your big break.
