As Nigerians celebrate the festive season, the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has called on citizens to prioritize their health by knowing their HIV status. The Director-General of NACA, Dr. Temitope Ilori, emphasized this in a statement issued by the agency’s Head of Public Relations and Protocol, Toyin Aderibigbe, on Sunday.

Importance of Knowing Your HIV Status

Dr. Ilori described Christmas as a season of joy and celebration but also an opportunity for individuals to make responsible health decisions. She urged Nigerians to take advantage of free and confidential HIV testing services available nationwide. Knowing your status is a powerful step toward securing your health and protecting others. We urge everyone to utilize the free and confidential HIV testing services available across the country,” she said.

Advancements in HIV Treatment

Dr. Ilori reassured Nigerians that HIV is no longer a death sentence due to advancements in testing and treatment. Early diagnosis allows access to lifesaving medications that ensure a healthier and longer life. HIV remains a significant public health concern, but early detection and treatment have transformed it into a manageable condition,” she noted.

Safe Practices During Festive Celebrations

Acknowledging the increase in social activities during the Yuletide, NACA advised Nigerians to adopt safe practices.

For sexually active individuals: Use protection to prevent the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.

For those practicing abstinence: Continue to uphold it as the safest option. Dr. Ilori stressed that ignorance is no longer an excuse, as HIV testing and education are widely accessible in Nigeria.

Knowing your status is a powerful step toward securing your health and protecting others. This festive season, give yourself the gift of health by visiting the nearest health facility or community testing center to know your HIV status.” — Dr. Temitope Ilori, NACA Director-General.

NACA’s Commitment to an AIDS-Free Nigeria

NACA reaffirmed its dedication to reducing the spread of HIV and achieving an AIDS-free Nigeria. The agency called on Nigerians to visit health facilities or community testing centers during the festive period to know their HIV status. This festive season, give yourself the gift of health by visiting the nearest health facility or community testing center to know your HIV status. Let us work together to create a healthier, happier Nigeria,” Dr. Ilori added.

The festive season is a time of joy, but it should also be a time for reflection and responsibility. By knowing your HIV status and adopting safe practices, Nigerians can protect their health and that of their loved ones, contributing to a healthier and AIDS-free nation.
