NNPC to Export New Crude Grade “Cawthorne” in March – Opportunities for Nigerians

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has announced that Nigeria will begin exporting a new light, sweet crude grade called Cawthorne in March. This move aims to boost oil production, increase exports, and strengthen Nigeria’s position within the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries as it seeks higher production targets.

Cawthorne crude has an API gravity of 36.4, making it like Nigeria’s flagship Bonny Light, which is highly valued for its high yields of gasoline and diesel. The first export is expected in the third week of March, with loading scheduled between March 24 and 25 via the Floating Storage and Offloading (FSO) vessel Cawthorne, which can store about 2.2 million barrels.

Benefits and opportunities for Nigerians

Increased production: With Cawthorne, Nigeria’s crude supply could rise from 1.65 million barrels per day to roughly 1.7 million barrels per day, depending on operational stability and market demand.

Investment prospects: The new grade creates opportunities for Nigerian investors, traders, and companies involved in oil logistics, shipping, and refining to participate in export operations.

Job creation: As security and operational activity expand in the Niger Delta, there will be more jobs in pipeline maintenance, shipping, and oil services.

Diversification of export streams: Cawthorne is the third new crude grade in recent years, alongside Obodo (2025) and Utapate (2024), giving Nigerian producers flexibility in targeting different international markets and pricing advantages.

“The introduction of Cawthorne is part of Nigeria’s broader strategy to increase production, attract new buyers, and ensure that our oil industry remains competitive globally,” a NNPC spokesperson said.

How to benefit

Oil service providers can register for contracts related to logistics, security, and equipment supply.

Investors can explore participation in crude trading and refining opportunities.

Entrepreneurs in transportation, shipping, and storage can collaborate with oil companies and intermediaries handling Cawthorne.

Students and professionals in energy, engineering, and petroleum studies can seek internships or training with NNPC or affiliated partners.

The export of Cawthorne crude is a significant step toward strengthening Nigeria’s oil sector, enhancing revenue, and creating business opportunities for locals. Nigerians interested in oil, logistics, and trade should explore ways to engage with this expanding sector as production and exports rise.
