Oluremi Tinubu Pledges Support for Albinos, Calls for Equality and Protection

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has reaffirmed her dedication to supporting persons living with albinism. In a statement issued in Abuja to mark the 2025 International Albinism Awareness Day, she expressed solidarity with the albino community and called for stronger efforts to end discrimination.

The 2025 theme, “Demanding Our Rights: Protect Our Skin, Preserve Our Lives,” highlights the urgent need for policies that ensure safety, access to healthcare, and protection for persons with albinism.

A Powerful Call to Action

Senator Tinubu described the theme as a wake-up call to Nigerians to show greater compassion and respect towards people with albinism. She stressed that inclusion should not be optional but a priority in national development plans.

“I reaffirm my commitment to advocating for inclusive policies and public education that protect the rights of persons with albinism. We must build a society where every Nigerian, regardless of skin condition, can thrive with pride and dignity,” Tinubu said.

She emphasized the importance of public education in eradicating stigma and urged all sectors of society to support the rights of those affected.

Campaign Against Discrimination

The Nigerian albino community has also launched a national campaign aimed at fighting discrimination and promoting awareness. This initiative seeks to educate the public about the challenges albinos face, particularly in areas of health, safety, and social acceptance.

People living with albinism are often targets of harmful stereotypes and, in some cases, violence. Many also suffer from skin cancers due to lack of protection and limited access to dermatological care.

“Persons with albinism are not invisible. They are part of our communities and deserve the same rights, safety, and dignity as every other Nigerian. It is time we protect their skin, preserve their lives, and promote their voices.” — Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, First Lady of Nigeria

With the First Lady’s renewed commitment and the launch of the national campaign, there is growing hope for better inclusion and equal rights for persons with albinism in Nigeria. Now more than ever, collective efforts are needed to promote awareness, change perceptions, and push for policies that protect everyone, regardless of skin condition.
