Senate Approves ₦50 Million Support for Families of Slain Teachers and Soldiers After Oyo School Rescue

 Senate President Godswill Akpabio

The Nigerian Senate has approved a ₦50 million donation to support the families of three soldiers and two teachers who lost their lives during the rescue operation that freed abducted pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Under the approval, each of the five families will receive ₦10 million to help provide financial support for the children and dependants left behind.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the donation during plenary, stating that the intervention is intended to assist the families while recognising the ultimate sacrifice made by the deceased in the fight against insecurity.

“The sacrifices of those who gave their lives to protect innocent Nigerians should never be forgotten. Supporting their families is a way of honoring their courage and service.”

Successful Rescue After 56 Days

The rescue operation followed the May 15 abduction of more than 45 pupils and teachers from two schools in Oriire LGA. After 56 days in captivity, the victims were successfully rescued on July 10 through a coordinated, intelligence-led operation involving the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies.

According to the Senate, the operation also led to the elimination of several criminals and the arrest of eight suspected terrorists, restoring confidence among parents, schools and communities.

Recognition for Security Personnel

The Senate paid tribute to the fallen heroes—Lieutenant F.A. Isaac, Private Silas Musa, Sergeant Abena John Jerome, and the two teachers who lost their lives during the operation.

Lawmakers also called for comprehensive medical care and welfare support for Lance Corporal Adamu Hussain, who sustained serious injuries while protecting the abducted children during the rescue mission.

Conclusion

The Senate’s ₦50 million support package reflects the nation’s appreciation for the bravery of the teachers and soldiers who paid the ultimate price while protecting innocent lives. Beyond financial assistance, lawmakers reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening school security, improving the welfare of security personnel and supporting policies that will help combat insecurity across Nigeria.
