641 Nigerian Teens Gain Digital and Vocational Skills: How Young People Can Benefit
More than 641 teenagers in Abuja have received practical training in digital, creative and vocational skills, highlighting the growing importance of equipping young Nigerians with skills they can use beyond the classroom.
The programme was organised by Olivehill Development Initiative in collaboration with TOM Camp Outreach Ministries at Government Science Secondary School, Maitama, on August 12, 2026.
Skills Teens Can Learn and Build On
Participants were introduced to 20 practical skills, including cybersecurity, coding, graphics design, mobile cinematography, bead making, soap making, scented candle production, shoe making, crocheting and fascinator making.
Importantly, the teenagers did not only watch demonstrations. They had opportunities to practise selected skills using real materials, helping them understand how their new knowledge can be developed into future careers or small businesses.
“When a young person is exposed to a skill and given the opportunity to practise it, we are not simply teaching them something new; we are expanding what they can imagine for their future.” — Idara Umana, ODI Chief Operating Officer.
How Nigerian Teens Can Benefit
This programme offers a useful lesson for parents, students and young people across Nigeria:
1. Start learning early: Teenagers do not have to wait until university before developing useful skills. Digital and vocational skills can be learned alongside formal education.
2. Choose one skill and practise: Young people can start with free or affordable learning resources online. Platforms such as freeCodeCamp offer free coding lessons, while Cisco Networking Academy provides technology and cybersecurity learning opportunities.
3. Turn skills into opportunities: With consistent practice, skills such as graphics design, coding, cybersecurity, crafts and digital content creation can become freelance services, businesses or career pathways.
4. Look for youth programmes: Parents and teenagers should follow credible NGOs, schools, government agencies and training organisations for announcements about free training, internships, competitions and scholarships.
Why Skills Training Matters
The Abuja programme demonstrates that practical skills development can help young Nigerians discover their interests, build confidence and prepare for a changing economy.
For teenagers, the key message is simple: learn, practise and keep improving. A skill discovered today could become a career or business opportunity tomorrow.
Nigeria’s young population represents enormous potential. Giving teenagers access to digital skills, vocational training and practical experience can help them become more creative, employable and entrepreneurial.
