Lagos Moves to Improve Water Transport: What Residents Should Know and How to Benefit

Lagos State is taking major steps to make water transportation safer, faster, and more affordable through the new Omi Eko Project, which will introduce 78 electric ferries and modern floating platforms across key jetties. This initiative is part of a long-term plan running from 2024 to 2030, designed to ease traffic, improve safety, and create a cleaner environment.

A Safer and More Comfortable Way to Travel

The state government is installing modern concrete floating pontoons at jetties. These pontoons act like stable floating platforms that make boarding safer and easier.

Many Lagosians are often afraid of shaky wooden platforms, but these new pontoons provide a firm, concrete-like surface.

“This is more than infrastructure; it’s about transforming the way Lagosians move, work, and connect.”- Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Dayo Bush Alebiosu,

These pontoons are already being installed in areas like Agboyi Ketu, Ijegun Egba, Bayeku/Ikorodu, and more installations will follow in Ebute Ero, Ijede, Apa, Mile 2, Mowo, and other strategic locations.

What the Omi Eko Project Offers

The €410m project will:

  • Deploy 78 high-capacity electric ferries
