Don’t Wait for White-Collar Jobs – NYSC Urges Corps Members to Embrace Entrepreneurship
Corp members
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has encouraged outgoing corps members not to rely solely on white-collar jobs, but to take bold steps toward self-employment and wealth creation.
This advice was given by the NYSC Coordinator in Rivers State, Mr. Moses Oleghe, during the passing-out ceremony of the 2024 Batch B Stream I corps members, held in Port Harcourt.
Develop the Right Mindset
Addressing the graduates, Oleghe reminded them of the values of discipline, dedication, and creativity they had acquired during their service year. He noted that these qualities should serve as a foundation for building their futures.
“Rather than wait for white-collar jobs, outgoing corps members should channel their energy into establishing businesses and creating wealth with their own hands,” he said.
Oleghe stressed that success requires more than a degree or office job — it involves hard work, determination, and a willingness to innovate. He urged the corps members to see themselves as solution providers and contributors to national development.
Service Year Statistics
According to Oleghe, a total of 2,302 corps members successfully completed their service year in Rivers State. Unfortunately, two corps members lost their lives during service, while 17 others (seven males and ten females) had their service year extended due to various infractions.
He also disclosed that two corps members were granted pardon, while 23 others (13 males and 10 females) absconded from service.
“Creativity, hard work, discipline, focus, determination, and dedication are the ingredients needed to achieve your aspirations.” – Mr. Moses Oleghe
As the NYSC continues to promote youth empowerment, its message is clear: graduates must look beyond office jobs and instead become employers of labour. With the right mindset, Nigeria’s young people can turn ideas into income and challenges into opportunities.
