FG Opens ₦50 Million Student Venture Capital Grant for 50 Nigerian Student Ventures

 Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa.

The Federal Government has opened applications for Cohort 2 of the Student Venture Capital Grant (S-VCG), also known as the Next Moonshot Initiative, giving Nigerian student entrepreneurs an opportunity to access up to ₦50 million in equity-free funding.

The programme is designed to help students transform promising STEMM innovations into commercially viable businesses. Up to 50 outstanding student ventures are expected to be selected in the current cohort.

What Is the Student Venture Capital Grant?

The Student Venture Capital Grant (S-VCG) is an initiative of the Federal Ministry of Education supporting student-led businesses and innovations in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medical Sciences (STEMM).

According to the official S-VCG portal, selected ventures can receive up to ₦50 million in equity-free funding, alongside validation support, mentorship and opportunities for national visibility.

“Nigeria does not lack innovative young people. What many lack is the opportunity and capital to take these ideas further.” — Adebayo Onigbanjo

Who Can Benefit?

The opportunity is particularly important for students already developing a business, innovation, product, or technology solution

According to the official programme portal:

  • You must be a student currently enrolled in a Nigerian university, polytechnic or college of education
  • Students from both public and private institutions can participate.
  • The lead applicant must generally be 300 level or above, or equivalent
  • Students below 300 levels can participate as team members where the team is led by an eligible student.
  • The venture must have a CAC-registered business name/company
  • Your project should fall within STEMM — Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics or Medical Sciences.
  • The project should be beyond just an idea or basic proof of concept and demonstrate real-world potential.
  • Applicants need a clear business plan, including expenditure milestones and key performance indicators.

How to Apply: Step by Step

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility

Before starting your application, confirm that you meet the student, institution, and venture requirements.

Step 2: Prepare Your Venture

Your application should clearly explain the problem you are solving, your solution, target customers, business models, market opportunity, and growth potential

Do not submit an idea that exists only on paper. The official portal says projects should be sufficiently developed to demonstrate real-world potential.

Step 3: Register Your Business

The official S-VCG requirements indicate that the project or innovation should have a business name registered with a CAC-registered company in Nigeria. Make sure your business documentation is in order before applying.

Step 4: Create Your Application

Go to the official S-VCG application portal and select the student option to begin your application. The portal allows students to submit their business information, pitch video and funding requests.

Step 5: Explain Exactly How You Will Use the Funding

Be specific about what the requested funding will be achieved. Explain your milestones, expenditure plan, and KPIs rather than simply asking for money.

Step 6: Prepare for the Selection Process

Applications will pass through multiple stages of assessment. According to the announcement, applications will initially undergo AI-assisted screening, followed by assessment by human evaluators. Shortlisted applicants will make virtual presentations, while finalists will participate in a boot camp and pitch their ventures before an evaluation committee.

Step 7: Take Advantage of Mentorship

Successful applicants will not only receive funding. The programme also provides opportunities for mentorship, business development, validation and networking, helping founders turn their innovations into stronger businesses.

When Is the Deadline?

Application deadline: September 30, 2026.

Students interested in the opportunity should avoid waiting until the final day. Start preparing your business documents, pitch, and application early.

The programme is also undertaking a nationwide application roadshow from September 6 to September 30, visiting selected tertiary institutions across Nigeria to increase awareness and participation.

Why Students Should Take This Opportunity Seriously

This is more than a grant opportunity. It could provide access to business funding, mentorship, validation, visibility, and connections that can help a promising student venture grow.

The official Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative identifies S-VCG as a flagship STEMM programme aimed at helping students transform innovations into commercially viable products.

If you are a student entrepreneur with a developed STEMM solution, this is the time to prepare—not just to apply, but to present your venture professionally.

The Student Venture Capital Grant 2026 provides an important opportunity for Nigerian student innovators to move from developing an idea to building a scalable business. With up to ₦50 million in equity-free funding available to selected ventures, eligible students should review the requirements carefully and submit a strong application before the September 30, 2026, deadline.

Do not just have an idea. Build it, document it, prepare it, and apply.
