Lagos Supports 733 Widows with Empowerment Programmes: How to Benefit

Lagos State Government has supported 733 widows through empowerment and welfare initiatives designed to promote economic independence, protect rights, and create sustainable livelihood opportunities.
The intervention was announced during the 2026 International Widows Day commemoration organized by the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA).
The theme, “Justice, Dignity and Economic Power for Widows,” highlights an important message: widows need more than sympathy—they need skills, financial opportunities, protection and access to justice.
What Support Is Available?
According to the state government, WAPA runs several programmes that can benefit eligible women, including widows.
1. Free Skills Acquisition
The ministry operates tuition-free Skills Acquisition Centres across Lagos’ five IBILE divisions. These centres are designed to help residents acquire practical skills that can support self-employment and income generation.
2. Enterprise Equipment Support
The Micro Enterprise Support Initiative provides productive equipment to entrepreneurs. This type of support can help small business owners improve their operations without having to purchase every piece of equipment themselves.
