FirstBank Spark a Gem Challenge: How Nigerian Women Entrepreneurs Can Access Grants, Mentorship and Business Support

FirstBank has strengthened its commitment to supporting women-owned businesses through the launch of the Spark A Gem Challenge, an initiative that awarded ₦10 million in grants to outstanding female entrepreneurs in Nigeria. 

The programme is part of the bank’s Women Preneur Pitch-A-Ton initiative under the FirstGem proposition. Beyond cash grants, participants receive valuable business training, mentorship, networking opportunities, financial literacy, and access to future funding opportunities. 

A total of 356 women-owned businesses from sectors including agriculture, healthcare, education, food services, and other industries applied for the challenge. Following a competitive selection process, eight finalists participated in a four-day business development boot camp before presenting their business ideas to an independent panel. 

Mrs. Onyinye Obayi, founder of Honeypot Confections Ltd., emerged as the overall winner and received a ₦5 million grant, while the first and second runners-up received ₦3 million and ₦2 million respectively.

Step 1: Own a Registered Business 

The programme is designed for women who own or manage businesses. Registering your business with the appropriate authorities increases your chances of qualifying.

Join the FirstGem community to gain access to financial products, advisory services, and updates about future opportunities. 

Step 3: Watch for Application Announcements 

Monitor FirstBank’s official website and social media pages for the next application window. Submit all required documents before the deadline. 

Step 4: Prepare a Strong Business Proposal 

Clearly explain your business model, achievements, financial needs, and growth plans. A well-prepared proposal significantly improves your chances. 

Step 5: Participate in Training 

Shortlisted applicants receive capacity-building sessions covering financial management, business strategy, and entrepreneurship. 

Step 6: Pitch Your Business 

Finalists present their businesses before judges. Strong innovation, sustainability, and growth potential are key selection factors.
